Expanding the Curriculum: Science and Geography Through the Quran ππ
2 minute read
Bismillah: As we continued to homeschool our children, we saw an opportunity to expand their curriculum beyond Quranic stories and lessons. We wanted to introduce them to science and geography through the lens of the Quran, helping them see the world as a reflection of Allahβs creation. π
Integrating Faith and Knowledge π±
- Quranic Inspiration: We began by exploring Quranic verses that referenced natural phenomena, like the creation of the heavens and the earth, the water cycle, and the diversity of life on earth. These verses became the foundation for our science lessons, showing how Allahβs words align with the natural world. π¦οΈ
- Hands-On Learning: Our science lessons were filled with hands-on activities. For instance, we studied the water cycle by observing rain, rivers, and clouds, linking these observations to Quranic verses that describe how Allah sends down rain to revive the earth. Similarly, our geography lessons included maps, exploring the regions mentioned in the Quran, such as the land of Prophet Musa (AS). πΊοΈ
- Connecting to the Quran: Each lesson was tied back to the Quran, helping the children see the connection between their academic studies and their faith. This approach deepened their understanding of both subjects and strengthened their belief in the harmony between science and Islam.
One memorable lesson was when we studied the mountains mentioned in the Quran. We took a family trip to a nearby mountain and discussed how Allah created mountains to stabilize the earth. This experience brought the lesson to life, making it tangible and memorable. ποΈ
Expanding Horizons with Iqrasaurus π¦
This phase of our journey emphasized the Investigate and Integrate pillars, as we sought to expand our childrenβs horizons by integrating Quranic teachings with their academic studies. By connecting science and geography to the Quran, we aimed to foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for Allahβs creation.
As Allah says in the Quran:
"And He has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it shift with you, and made rivers and roads that you may be guided." (Surah An-Nahl, 16:15) π
This verse inspired us to explore the natural world with our children, helping them see the signs of Allahβs creation all around them.
A Peek Into Our Conversations π¨οΈ
Syauqi: "Daddy, how do mountains stop the earth from moving?"
Daddy Ikram: "Allah created mountains to keep the earth stable, just like He created everything in the world perfectly."
Nurin: "So, when we see mountains, we remember how powerful Allah is?"
Ummi Ziehan: "Exactly, Nurin! The mountains are a sign of Allahβs greatness, just like everything else in nature."
End Note: Integrating science and geography with Quranic teachings helps children see the world as a reflection of Allahβs creation. Join us next time as we welcome our youngest, Qoyis, to the family and introduce him to the Quran. ππ
